How to Play Beach Volleyball: Beginner's Guide
Learn how to play beach volleyball with this beginner’s guide: rules, techniques, equipment, and key tips to get started on the sand.
Beach volleyball is an increasingly popular sport for people looking to train outdoors, boost their physical fitness, and enjoy a vibrant sporting community. At Beach Sports Catalunya (BSC), many players take up the sport every season with no prior experience, discovering a dynamic, fun, and accessible discipline for all levels.
Whether you are completely new to sand sports or looking to improve, this guide covers everything you need to know about how to play beach volleyball, from fundamental rules to key tips for training with confidence.
How Many Players and Court Positioning
In official beach volleyball, the standard format is two against two (2v2), though training sessions and casual games can accommodate more players depending on group dynamics.
This means each player covers a significant portion of the court, both in defense and offense. Coordination, clear communication, and game awareness are core skills developed right from beginner level at Beach Sports Catalunya. The sand court is slightly smaller than an indoor volleyball court, and the sand surface requires players to adapt their footwork, balance, and physical stamina.
When starting out at BSC, learning effective court positioning is one of the first milestones. While roles are flexible, typically one partner focuses on blocking at the net while the other manages backcourt defense. Each team has up to three touches to return the ball over the net, coordinating pass, set, and attack.
For beginners, mastering fundamental movements and reading game flow comes first. At Beach Sports Catalunya, our coaches guide you step-by-step through individual mechanics before introducing advanced tactics.
How Scoring Works in Beach Volleyball
Matches are typically played as best-of-three sets. The first two sets are played to 21 points, and a third deciding set (if needed) is played to 15 points. A minimum two-point advantage is required to win any set.
Beach volleyball uses the rally point scoring system, where every rally results in a point regardless of who served. Teams switch sides frequently throughout the match to balance the effects of wind and sunlight.
Serving is a pivotal skill: an accurate, tactical serve puts immediate pressure on the opponent's reception. During training sessions at BSC, different serving techniques are practiced to suit each player's level and progression.
Most Common Faults to Avoid
Regular practice with a coach quickly eliminates these common errors, making movements feel natural and boosting on-court confidence.
